It's a small city on the coast. The old section is white walls with trim in blue or, less often, yellow. Walking through these streets is like slipping back to another time. Perfect alignment and even pavement become unimportant and the white walls of the buildings seem to both absorb and reflect light.

I've been to that same point above the rocks several times, but only in October are these flowers in bloom. The coastline of California is a magical place where the near and far merge and blend. And the colors of the sea are wonderful.

The light fades from the sky at night as the warm colors fade from the buildings below. Streets that had been bustling with tourists and cars during the day become more mysterious and alluring with only streetlights and the occasional car to partially illuminate them.

It was Asian Day at the Botanical Garden. Some were wearing native dress and the carp normal flown on children's day were flying overhead. This child is more interested in the brightly colored fish in the pond.

This was not the pose the child's mother chose to have painted, but it's the one the painter liked best. He was only about four at the time, extremely patient but also insistent that he hold his favorite video games while sitting there. And so he does.

The colors of the foliage in the background are what drew me to paint this. It could almost be a fall day, although this part is in Florida and there are no fall days here, no fall colors familiar to anyone up north. For the birds it was feeding time and they probably didn't care about fall colors one way or the other.

For those who can, this would be the way to spend a hot summer's day. Sand between the toes and water in beautiful blues and greens, and why not build sand castles while there?

Once a week, Peter arranges a model for several of us who love to do life drawing studies. Not often, but occasionally the model cancels and there's no time to find a replacement. And so, we paint Peter.

Warmed by the sun, children gather sand and shells while the gentle waves roll into the shore. Their reflections add warm notes to the cool pastels of the water.

As a tropical plant this one produces spectacular color. Use your imagination and the leaves become dancers leaping across a stage.

What was striking about this scene was that for at least three blocks every building, person, truck, and even the night sky was glowing, not from fire, fortunately, but from the lights of the trucks. The fire was out by this time and the fire fighters were returning to their vehicles.

Early morning on a beach is a special time, one shared only with the sea birds and a few other easy walkers. To be able to see the sun rise above the mist and watch the water change color as it does is a special privilege and it sets the tone for the rest of the day.

A clear, calm morning along the Gulf Coast. Not quite warm enough for swimming but a beautiful day to be walking near the water.

Think herding cats! They were all over the room and following directions was only a sometimes thing. But they were adorable! No doubt about that!

This is the main street of Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island. Restaurants, bars, and shops line the street on both sides, with colored lights everywhere. It’s a happening, happy place to be, day or night.

Ibis have looked the same since they appeared in Egyption hieroglyphics. They graze in people’s yards using their long beaks to dig out undesirable insects buried underground. Much better than using insecticide.

We walked the beach nearly every evening and each night the sky and the water were different and beautifully so. On this evening the water of the Bay was unusually calm, allowing the reflections of lights on the pier to spread almost to where we were. It was magic.

Edith posed for our life drawing group for a number of years. She could hold a position indefinitely and even her facial expression never changed. That is, unless she heard something from one of us that amused her! If you look closely it’s the corners of her lips and the lower lids of her eyes that give her away.
